Repeat sex offender from Groton to serve nine years for assaults on teens

A registered sex offender pleaded guilty this week in New London Superior Court to sexually assaulting two teens and will be sentenced in October to nine years in prison.

Christian J. Young, 47, of Groton will be on probation for 15 years following his release from prison and will be required to register as a sexual offender.

Because he is a repeat offender, he may be required to register for the remainder of his life, according to prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman.

Young, who has been held in lieu of $300,500 since he was arrested in March, pleaded guilty to risk of injury to a minor and admitted to violating the terms of his probation.

Groton City detectives began investigating on March 14 after the Department of Children and Families reported a 14-year-old girl had disclosed at school that she had been sexually assaulted by Young, who was a friend of the family.

Her 13-year-old brother subsequently disclosed that Young had sexually assaulted him several times during visits to Young's home.

Arrested at Water's Edge Campground in Lebanon, Young submitted to questioning by detectives and admitted he had sexually assaulted the children on several occasions.

At the time of his arrest, he was on probation and registered as a sex offender, having been convicted in 2003 of possession of a machine gun, illegal sexual contact with someone under age 16 and risk of injury to a minor.

In that case, he was sentenced to three years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. As a condition of his probation, he was not to have contact wiith minors.

Released in 2006, he was charged with violating probation in 2007. He served an additional year in prison for that offense and his probation was extended to June 2017.

A month before his latest arrest, Young was charged in February 2016 with breach of peace after he allegedly tried to force a person into a ditch with his car, according to Ferryman. That case is pending, she said.

Young is represented by attorney Peter D. Catania. The case is being heard before Judge Hillary B. Strackbein.
