Man wanted on state, local warrants arrested in Ledyard

Ledyard — A countywide search involving multiple police departments Wednesday ended with the arrest of a man wanted on state and local arrest warrants, according to police.

Police said they learned about 6 p.m. Wednesday that Urbain Joseph Savaria, 52, of 961 Long Cove Road, Gales Ferry — who was wanted on warrants out of Ledyard and state police Troop E — had been seen near a Long Cove Road residence.

Working in tandem, Ledyard police, state police and a Groton Town police K-9 unit went to the residence and attempted to serve the warrants. Savaria, however, was no longer there, police said.

Police, concerned about where he might be headed, initiated a county-wide search for Savaria.

Shortly after 7 p.m., someone spotted the vehicle Savaria was last known to be driving on state Route 12 in Gales Ferry. Police located Savaria, who was not in the vehicle, nearby and took him into custody without incident.

He was charged on the Ledyard warrant with violation of a protective order.

Information about what state police charged Savaria with was not immediately available.

Savaria, held on a $25,000 court-set bond, was due in New London Superior Court on Thursday.
