New London — A vehicle traveling down Eugene O'Neill Drive struck two pedestrians at the Trolley Information Center, pinning one.

The pedestrians were sitting at granite slabs in front of the kiosk when they were struck, witnesses said.

The vehicle became wedged between the slabs and the kiosk, according to a police release issued later Friday.

Thirteen members of the New London Fire Department responded at 5:47 p.m. and freed the man, whose lower body was pinned under the car and against the kiosk. Police reported he was conscious and alert as they worked to dislodge him.

They used high-pressure air bags to lift the vehicle, Battalion Chief Edward Sargent said.

The other pedestrian was knocked down and found in a flowerbed by emergency services.

Both pedestrians and the driver of the vehicle were transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital by Quaker Hill Fire Company, Oswegatchie Fire Company and Jordan Fire Company ambulances.

People often sit on the two granite slabs in front of the kiosk, witnesses said.

Krista Stan said she was driving on Golden Street looking to park when she saw the car attempting to make a left turn when it swerved toward the kiosk.

"The car almost flipped ... he just turned right into it on two wheels," she said.

Arthur Lerner was stopped at the Golden Street stop sign when the vehicle swerved first toward him and, "coming way closer than anyone should be," swerved toward the kiosk.

Members of the city detective bureau and accident re-construction team still were investigating as of 8:47 p.m.

Police asked anyone who may have witnessed the accident or had information about it to call the New London Department Detective Bureau at (860) 447-1481.
