Waterford man sentenced to more than 7 years in prison on cocaine trafficking charges

Luis "Guichan" Zayas, 40, of Waterford was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hartford to more than seven years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, on drug-trafficking charges.

The sentence was announced in a news release Friday by U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly.

Zayas was arrested in April 2013, during a massive federal and state sweep targeting drug-trafficking operations. More than 100 individuals were charged in connection with the investigations. Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Secret Service and New London police, among many other agencies, were involved in the initiative, according to the release.

Zayas and Pedro "Cheito" Rivera were accused of arranging shipments of cocaine from Puerto Rico to the New London area. They then allegedly distributed the cocaine to customers in the region through several associates.

On Jan. 29, 2015, Zayas pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute it. Rivera also pleaded guilty to his charges and on Dec. 9, 2015, was sentenced to more than nine years in prison.
