Waterford — Firefighters from Waterford and New London departments on Thursday morning battled a fire in a home on Old Barry Road.

On scene, about 10 people in watched from the yard as the home at 10 Old Barry Road burned.

Neighbors from nearby Jodry Street said the residents of the house weren’t home when the blaze began, which was called in at 10:09 a.m., but their dog was. The neighbors said they were alerted to the fire when they smelled smoke in the air.

Cohanzie Fire Company Chief Todd Branche, who was the first person on scene, said all five Waterford companies came to the house, with the New London FAST Team on standby. The main fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes, but firefighters spent about an hour ventilating the house and extinguishing smaller, hidden fires.

He said members located the dog inside and performed CPR and administered oxygen with no success.

The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal.

Day Staff Writer Amanda Hutchinson contributed to this report.
