Norwich — Police on Monday morning charged a 34-year-old city man in connection with a second September sexual assault, according to police.

Edward J. Simpson, 34, formerly of 92 Washington St., Apt. 1E, was charged Monday on a warrant with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and first-degree assault on an elderly person.

According to police, those charges are in relation to the beating and rape of a 62-year-old woman early in the morning of Sept. 17 on the east side of the city. Police said the assault left the woman with life-threatening injuries. She had to be transferred from The William W. Backus Hospital to Hartford Hospital, where she remained for several days.

Simpson previously was charged on a warrant with first-degree kidnapping, criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual assault and third-degree assault.

Those charges correspond to a Sept. 18 incident in which a 19-year-old woman reported being beaten and raped by a man on West Thames Street.

Police said the state Department of Correction has had Simpson in custody since Sept. 19. He was charged Monday in New London Superior Court while appearing for his previous sexual assault case. The court added a $500,000 bond to his previously set bond in light of the most recent charges.

Officer Kenneth Wright and Detective Kyle Besse carried out both sexual assault investigations.
