Settlement reached in civil case linked to three deaths on Interstate 95

An out-of-court settlement was reached this week for three of the four people who filed a wrongful death suit against the tractor-trailer driver charged in connection with the deaths of three people in a 2014 crash on Interstate 95 in Waterford.

Killed in the Oct. 12, 2014, crash were Dacari Robinson, 2, his sister Sanaa Reynolds, 9, and Robinson’s father, 26-year-old Darin Robinson. The mother of the children, Baughnita Leary, was the driver of the family vehicle and the lone survivor. Police said she had slowed for traffic congestion when the tractor-trailer rear-ended her vehicle.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Gerard S. Dube of Swansea, Mass., and the company he was driving for, Gold Medal Bakery Inc., were the targets of the lawsuit. Dube was criminally charged in the crash.

Attorney Robert L. Sweeney Jr., who represents Baughnita Leary, said the settlement is confidential. It resolved the case short of trial, saving family members the trauma of reliving the accident, he said. Court records show the suit was withdrawn on Monday.

Dube’s criminal case remains pending in New London Superior Court. He has pleaded not guilty to three counts of misconduct with a motor vehicle, reckless driving and following too closely, among other charges.
