Salem — A five-vehicle crash killed one and injured several others at the intersection of Rattlesnake Ledge Road and Old Colchester Road on Friday evening.

A fire official said 15 people were transported to area hospitals by ambulances and Life Star helicopter. Two helicopters were called to the scene, although one later was canceled. On Saturday, state police said in a report on the accident that 13 people were involved, with one fatality and seven injured.

Four patients were treated and released at The William W. Backus Hospital, said spokesman Steve Coates, who confirmed that one person died.

At least one person had to be extricated from their vehicle by Gardner Lake Volunteer Fire Company.

In addition to an ambulance from Gardner Lake, nine ambulances total from Lebanon, Salem, two from Colchester and three American Ambulance all responded, Jim Savalle a firefighter-EMT with Gardner Lake said. Bozrah and Oakdale also responded with emergency services personnel.

The road was closed for several hours, though a member of the fire company reported that one lane had been opened at 10:10 p.m.

The call about the crash first came in around 5:20 p.m., said Gardner Lake Fire Company Deputy Chief Joe Danao.

Angelina Keramidas of Montville said she was driving around the area when she saw a woman getting out of her car after an accident on the road. Another vehicle heading fast southbound along the road with two occupants ran into the woman as she was checking on people in her car, Keramidas said. She said one of the occupants in the vehicle looked badly injured.

“I was stopped to make sure everyone was OK ... she was laying on the ground,” Keramidas said. She said she saw emergency service personnel transport the woman away.

No further information was available late Friday.
