New London to host promotional ceremony for officer Friday

New London — Residents are encouraged to attend a ceremony Friday during which Officer Joshua Bergeson will be promoted to the rank of detective.

The ceremony is set to take place at 4 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.

According to a news release from Mayor Michael Passero’s office, Bergeson is a 10-year veteran of the department who was born in Groton and graduated from Fitch High School in 2002.

Bergeson went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, during which time he completed a tour in Iraq, before majoring in environmental earth science and sustainable energy resources at Eastern Connecticut State University.

During his time in New London, Bergeson has amassed 17 letters of accommodation and has joined the department’s Crisis Intervention Team, Bicycle Patrol Unit and Rifle Squad.

Bergeson, currently on the midnight shift, has distinguished himself as a leading enforcer of driving under the influence laws. He also helps instructors at the police academy teach recruits about such enforcement.

Many members of Bergeson’s family have worked at local law enforcement agencies, including his late father, Axel Bergeson, his uncle, Gary Bergeson, and his brother, Todd Bergeson, who currently is a captain with the New London Police Department.

Bergeson’s wife, Andrea, and children — Logan, 4, and Emery, 2 — will assist in pinning Bergeson’s new badge at the ceremony.
