Groton — Town police said they arrested a local man Monday night just hours after he allegedly attempted to burglarize one home and did burglarize another.

Jarrett Romaine, 41, of 425 Bridge St. was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary, third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny.

According to police, Romaine first attempted to enter a house in the evening hours Monday but was scared off by a neighbor and fled on foot toward the Kings Highway section of town.

Not long afterward, police said a resident reported multiple pieces of jewelry had been stolen from his or her home.

Police obtained a description of the suspect and put it out to officers, who quickly found a man resembling the suspect, Romaine, in the Groton Square parking lot.

Police said Romaine was in possession of the jewelry stolen from the second home when they located him.

Romaine, who was arraigned in New London Superior Court on Tuesday, remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.
