Preston man charged with wielding gun during domestic dispute

Preston — State police on Wednesday arrested a Preston man who allegedly threatened a woman with a gun during a domestic dispute on Tuesday.

Bruce Ezell, 67, of 27 River Road is charged with first-degree threatening, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree strangulation, interfering with police, interfering with an emergency call, disorderly conduct and third-degree assault.

Police responded to reports of an active domestic dispute on Tuesday at Ezell's home, where they removed two people from the home through a back door. Inside, police said they confronted a wheelchair-bound Ezell, who they said smelled of alcohol. During an interview with Ezell, police said they learned he had several permitted weapons in the house. Ezell, however, denied knowledge of a .45 caliber handgun. Police said they found the gun in question under the pillow of Ezell’s medical bed.

The woman claims she was strangled, held from using her phone to call 911 and was threatened by Ezell, who pointed a gun at her and threatened to shoot her and “watch me bleed out slow,” according to a police report. Ezell denies the claims. He was taken by ambulance to The William Backus Hospital in Norwich for an emergency committal. Police said Ezell was similarly committed in 2015 and had weapons seized from his home at that time.

Ezell was held in lieu of a $75,000 and due to appear in Norwich Superior Court at a later date.
