Criminal investigation called off as Old Saybrook fire marshal resigns

Old Saybrook — The town fire marshal, whom authorities had been investigating for potential time sheet fraud, has agreed to resign, police said in a Friday news release.

According to Lt. Kevin Roche, authorities have suspended their investigation because of the agreement.

Donn Dobson was Old Saybrook's full-time fire marshal, and worked part time in Westbrook. In addition to voluntarily resigning from his positions in those towns, Dobson has agreed to pay restitution and to no longer work as a fire marshal in Middlesex County, Roche said.

Roche said Dobson was the sole subject of a criminal investigation into issues with time sheets submitted to various municipalities. The towns of Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Madison and Branford, the Madison Police Department, the Connecticut State Police and the Middlesex County State's Attorney Office cooperated in the “complex” criminal investigation, Roche said.

In a statement, Dobson's attorney, H. Brian Dumeer of the firm of Carlson & Dumeer LLC, wrote that Dobson had multiple conversations with the Middlesex County State's Attorney Office.

"He maintains no criminal conduct occurred, however, he regrets administrative errors that led to minor time keeping mistakes," Dumeer wrote.
