North Stonington — In an effort to maintain customer satisfaction, a liquor store was taking orders from customers driving up after a car crashed into the business early Saturday evening.

No one was injured in the crash at Stateline Discount Liquors, 270 Clarks Fall Road, but the building sustained significant damage, according to store manager Brett Marggraff. Police confirmed a woman was in custody in connection with the incident.

Katrina Oliver of West Kingston, R.I., was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs after failing field sobriety tests, state police said in an arrest report released late Saturday. The vehicle, a Dodge Charger, was towed from the scene by Seaport Auto, according to the report.

She was transported to Troop E barracks and was being held on a $500 cash bond. She was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 5.

Marggraff, who was in the liquor store building at the time of the crash, said he heard a loud thud and thought, given that there is a truck stop across the street, that a gas truck had exploded. He estimated that there was $50,000 worth of damage to the building.

A building inspector already had come to inspect the building by 6 p.m., according to Marggraff, who said around 6:45 p.m. that the store was staying open for a few more hours. He was taking orders from people driving up, going into the store and bringing what they wanted back to their cars.

The store will be closed Sunday but will offer curb service starting Monday until repairs are complete, he said later.
