    Montville police to swear in 1 officer, promote another

    Montville — Police on Monday morning will swear in one officer and promote another at Town Hall, Mayor Ronald McDaniel announced Thursday.

    According to a news release, the new hire is 31-year-old Tyler J. Smith, a U.S. Air Force veteran who is leaving his role as a patrol officer in Norwich to come to town.

    Smith joined the Air Force in 2006 and achieved the rank of staff sergeant before being honorably discharged in 2014, the release states. He went to high school in Litchfield and obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from American International College in 2012.

    Smith graduated from the state Police Academy in 2015.

    Detective Michael P. Pierce, a 13-year veteran of the department, will be promoted to the rank of patrol sergeant. According to the release, the 35-year-old went to high school in Durham, got a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Franklin Pierce College in 2005 and earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Boston University in 2015.

    Pierce graduated the academy in 2005.

    The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 9 a.m.
