A New London man was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison for illegal possession of ammunition in connection with a May 29, 2014, shooting in the city.

West Robertson, 34, also known as "Po," had pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition. He has been detained since he was arrested in June 2014.

In addition to a sentence of 120 months in prison, U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant imposed three years of supervised release and ordered Robertson to perform 200 hours of community service.

According to the government, on May 29, 2014, in the vicinity of Maple Avenue in New London, Robertson was involved in an altercation with another individual and shot the victim several times before fleeing. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.

Witnesses identified Robertson as the shooter, and a surveillance camera captured his girlfriend's car fleeing the scene of the shooting. Police recovered shell casings in the Maple Avenue area and later recovered the .40-caliber Smith & Wesson that they said Robertson used in the shooting.

Robertson has multiple felony convictions, including for robbery, kidnapping and possession of narcotics. It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

This matter was investigated by the New London Police Department with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police, New London State's Attorney's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Karwan.
