Montville diner owner gets suspended sentence in marijuana possession

Montville — The owner of a former diner where police say they found more than eight pounds of marijuana in mason jars and lasagna pans pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and received a one-year suspended sentence on Wednesday.

A judge in Norwich Superior Court gave Melanie Lamperelli, 39, a suspended sentence and two years of probation for the charge, one of six she faced after police found the marijuana while investigating an open door at her diner on Route 163.

Lamperelli told police the marijuana belonged to her and that she had planned to use it for baking, Montville police said in a news release after her arrest in May.

According to the arrest warrant, Lamperelli told police that she was not selling marijuana, and did not give it to other people.

She told police she smokes marijuana for medical reasons, and was in the process of obtaining a license to purchase medical marijuana.

Additional charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school or day care were dropped.

The diner, named Mel's Diner, has since been closed.
