Police: New London man raised baseball bat as officers approached

New London — Two men were arrested Wednesday night in an incident that began as a disturbance on Montauk Avenue and ended with one of the men allegedly wielding a bat as officers approached.

Leonard Fraiter, 49, of 325 Huntington St. was charged with interfering with an officer and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Dennis Higgins, 55, of no certain address was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Capt. Brian Wright, officers went to a Montauk Avenue residence shortly after 10:30 p.m. for the report of a disturbance. They learned a group of men had smashed windows in the area and quickly located Fraiter and Higgins. Wright described the pair as "extremely intoxicated."

According to Wright, Fraiter raised the baseball bat he was holding despite officers’ commands, causing officers to believe they could be struck. Fraiter had to be “secured and taken down,” Wright said.

Higgins was arrested without incident. Wright said officers found a glass pipe with residue on his person.

Court date information wasn’t immediately available for either man.
