Small fire, smoke leads to evacuation of Montville apartment building

Montville — Smoke forced the temporary evacuation of a six-unit building on Leffingwell Road on Thursday.

The fire was reported at 8:32 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find smoke throughout 90 Leffingwell Road, Unit A. Mohegan, Montville, Mohegan Tribal and Oakdale departments responded to the scene with water tankers as a precaution, since the area is not serviced by fire hydrants.

Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said the cause of the smoke was a small fire in a door threshold that quickly was extinguished. One person was being evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but remains under investigation, Occhialini said. Residents were returning to the building by 9:10 p.m.
