Griswold — Department of Energy and Environmental Protection police have identified a missing snowmobile driver as local resident John Dubois.

Dubois, 56, was reported missing Saturday in the vicinity of Pachaug Pond. DEEP's Environmental Conservation police led a search for him along with state police and local fire departments Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Police temporarily suspended the search Sunday afternoon due to "unfavorable weather conditions" after dive teams searched in Pachaug Pond for several hours.

Environmental Conservation police said Monday they would continue the search for Dubois when weather conditions improve.

State police arrested Dubois in March 2011 after he allegedly ran over another man on Pachaug Pond with a snowmobile.

Dubois, who was then living at 12 Beach Drive in Griswold, was charged on March 1, 2011 with second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unreasonable speed and driving an unregistered snowmobile.

A DEEP spokesman confirmed that Dubois was still living at that address when he went missing Saturday.

Police said in 2011 that Dubois approached a man who was shoveling snow to create a skating rink on Pachaug Pond in January of that year.

Dubois, who was riding a snowmobile, argued with the man, struck him and ran him over with the snowmobile.

Both Dubois and the other man were taken to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment of their injuries. A judge in New London Superior Court sentenced him to a one-year suspended sentence for first-degree reckless endangerment.

Dubois also served a 30-day suspended sentence in 2009 for reckless driving.
