Ledyard man charged with DUI after causing crash near home

Ledyard — Police on Thursday charged a man with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after he allegedly backed out of his driveway and into another vehicle.

Leland F. Balch, 72, of 235 Haley Road is the accused. He also faces a charge of improper backing.

Police said officers responding to the crash suspected Balch had been drinking alcohol. Balch subsequently failed to perform field sobriety tests to standard, police said.

No one was injured in the crash.

Released on a $500 nonsurety bond, Balch is due March 1 in New London Superior Court.
