Police seek information on Groton crash that injured scooter driver

Groton — Police are investigating a Tuesday night crash in which they say a car collided with a scooter on state Route 12, seriously injuring the scooter operator, and then left the scene.

According to Groton Town police, the crash occurred north of Crystal Lake Road just after 11 p.m. Photos posted by the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department show the scooter was mangled in the wreck while the car sustained significant front-end and windshield damage.

In an afternoon news release, police said the crash involved a Yamaha scooter and a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. On scene, responders found the scooter operator with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening and transported him to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Police said he later was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital, where his vital signs were stable.

Police were withholding his name pending notification of family members.

According to police, responders located the car a short distance away from the scene, abandoned. Police interviewed witnesses on scene and are working to piece together who was behind the wheel when the crash occurred, as well as how many people were in the vehicle.

In addition to Poquonnock Bridge, the Submarine Base and Groton City fire departments responded. L+M paramedics also were on scene.
