Preston — Firefighters extinguished a fire Monday afternoon at a home at 25 Brown School Road.

A driver noticed smoke coming from the area of the roof and called 911 around 1:44 p.m., said Preston Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Tom Casey.

When firefighters responded, they saw smoke coming out of each of the home's gables, he said, and found the fire in the attic.

The first responders also made sure no one was in the one-story ranch house, he said. An occupant and pets had already evacuated before firefighters arrived.

The firefighters extinguished the blaze and the cause is under investigation, Casey said.

Preston City and Poquetanuck fire departments both under Preston Fire and Emergency Services, responded, along with a FAST team from the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department and an engine from Voluntown, he said.

Mutual aid was also on standby at both stations, he said.
