UConn to spend $10 million to fix roof at Gampel Pavilion

Storrs — The University of Connecticut is planning to spend $10 million to fix the roof and peeling ceiling of its 25-year-old Gampel Pavilion basketball arena.

The project will be presented to the school's Board of Trustees on Wednesday for approval.

According to the proposal, fabric wrapping the triangular ceiling tiles and a sealant in the roof are starting to degrade, causing problems including peeling and water leaks.

The school is already replacing the lighting system in the 10,000-seat arena, which was built in 1990.

The repair project also calls for looking at the possibility of replacing some "non-code compliant" electrical panels in the building and the arena's retractable sideline seating.

School officials say the repairs are designed to extend the building's life for another 10 to 15 years.
