Chairman of Connecticut police commission resigns after Florida arrest

WINDSOR LOCKS — The chairman of a Connecticut police commission has resigned after being charged in Florida with trying to cash in a winning $520,000 lottery ticket that was reported stolen by his niece.

Forty-nine-year-old Michael Royston resigned Sunday from the Windsor Locks Police Commission. He said in a statement he didn't do anything wrong and resigned because he didn't want his arrest to affect the commission.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that Royston was arrested Thursday at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. Police say Royston told them the ticket was a gift, but he couldn't name the giver.

Police say the ticket was reported stolen in July in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Royston's niece, a few days after she showed it to her uncle.

Royston posted $1,000 bail. He's charged with fraud and grand theft.
