Prosecutor seeks suspect in string of wine thefts

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Authorities in New Jersey are seeking a New York man on charges stemming from a string of expensive wine thefts in three states.

The Somerset County prosecutor has charged 25-year-old Scott Deluca of Wynantskill, New York, with shoplifting. The prosecutor says Deluca stole two bottles of wine valued at $1,858 from a liquor store in Bernardsville on Sept. 9.

Authorities say Deluca is wanted in a string of high-end wine thefts in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

Groton Town police said Deluca on Oct. 19 allegedly took a valuable bottle of wine from Octagon Restaurant, which is located within the Mystic Marriott Hotel and Spa. According to police, restaurant staff realized a bottle of 1990 Chateau Petrus wine was missing shortly after he was seen leaving the part of the restaurant where it was stored.

The 1990 Chateau Petrus is a wine that was priced at $4,799 on wine.com before it sold out.

Deluca has been seen driving a dark-colored 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has New York "Adirondack" personalized vanity license plates bearing the letters "SPA ND."
