Man pleads guilty to assault that left 2-year-old blind

STAMFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut man has pleaded guilty to reduced charges for an assault that left a 2-year-old girl blind in one eye.

The Stamford Advocate reports 32-year-old Pedro Salinas, of Norwalk, Connecticut, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and two felony counts of risk of injury to a minor.

He faces four years in jail and 20 years of probation at his March sentencing. Salinas is a convicted sex offender.

Salinas originally faced up to 63 years in jail for charges related to the June 2016 assault.

Court records show the child was hospitalized with bleeding in the brain, multiple bruises and retinal hemorrhaging. Salinas' arrest affidavit says the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome and additional assaults to her head.

Salinas' attorney declined to comment Tuesday.
