NYC paid $4.7 million in sex harassment claims over 4 years

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials are releasing data showing that the city settled 32 sexual harassment cases for $4.7 million over a four-year period ending last year.

The figures released Friday also show that city employees filed 1,312 sexual harassment complaints from the end of 2013 to the end of 2017. Of those, 221 were substantiated.

City officials say they will release the numbers annually going forward. In addition, all city employees will be re-trained on sexual harassment policies by April 2019.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the measures are intended "to send a loud and clear message of support to survivors."

Advocates for harassment victims have urged the Democratic mayor to disclose the sexual harassment data since the #MeToo movement brought wide attention to the issue last year.
