New commissioner announces reorganization of Connecticut DMV

HARTFORD — The new commissioner of the state Department of Motor Vehicle has announced a reorganization of the agency, which has been plagued by computer issues, long lines and other problems.

Michael Bzdyra has named a chief operating officer, Jim Rio, to oversee the DMV's customer-service divisions.

Bzdyra says the agency also will begin funneling its customer phone calls into a single, streamlined operation to reduce wait times.

He's also creating some new units within the agency. One will oversee projects that have the potential to impact customer service, in an attempt to increase accountability. The second will focus on training employees and collecting data on how well DMV operations are working.

Bzdyra says the changes will go into effect by May 16 and won't require any additional hiring or funding.
