Blumenthal to host 'emergency hearing' on health care overhaul

Hartford — Sen. Richard Blumenthal on Friday announced that he will host an emergency field hearing at 9 a.m. Monday in Room 310 of the state Capitol to receive public input about Republican health care overhaul plans.

Blumenthal will hear public testimony from 9:05 to 10:30 a.m. The Democratic senator said he is hosting the hearing because GOP leaders have been crafting a bill “in secret with no public input or oversight.”

Blumenthal said the GOP health care proposal passed in the House of Representatives last month would strip coverage, now provided under the Affordable Care Act, from 23 million Americans. Little is known about the Senate plan, he said. Yet the GOP leadership is intending to vote as early as next week without first conducting public hearings, receiving amendments in committee or allowing for bipartisan negotiations, Blumenthal said.

With no opportunity for official debate or public discussion, Blumenthal said he will convene this emergency field hearing to give members of the public a chance to voice for the record how repeal of the Affordable Care Act will impact them and their families.
