Former members of The Band carry on the legacy in show at The Kate

The Weight, from left, Randy Ciarlante, Marty Grebb, Bryon Isaacs, Jim Weider, and Brian Mitchell. (Phil Mansfield)

Folks who are truly nuts about The Band are almost dismissive of "casual fans" whose affection stems from knowing the two or three big "hits" and that's about it.

One of the great things, then, about The Weight is how their night-to-night sets cover not only fare like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Life is a Carnival" but also boast a fluid and freewheeling relationship with the deepest material in The Band's catalog.

This is largely because The Weight's Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante actually played IN The Band while fellow members Brian Mitchell was in the Levon Helm Band and Marty Grebb worked with Rick Danko and Richard Manuel. That's, ah, Band-y.

See The Weight Saturday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. There, you can call out for "Right as Rain," "Remedy" or "The Caves of Jericho" and the dudes in The Weight will know exactly what you're talking about.

The Weight, 8 p.m. Saturday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $40-$45; 1-877-503-1286.
