Coast Guard Band perform Memorial Day weekend concert at Fort Trumbull

The U.S. Coast Guard Band performs at Fort Trumbull State Park.

Wonderful music by a world-class group? Yes.

Impressive site with a beautiful water view? Yes.

    And it's all free? Yes.

Here's what we're talking about: the U.S. Coast Guard Band's Sunday afternoon concert at Fort Trumbull State Park, overlooking the Thames River in New London.

Since this is Memorial Day weekend, after all, the show will honor America's veterans. The program promises "invigorating Americana," as the band describes it. That translates to patriotic tunes and the official marches of all of the armed forces. Soprano soloist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget will sing "America the Beautiful," and "America of Thee I Sing," the band will play James Beckel's "Gardens of Stone" and John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever," and the Coast Guard Dixieland Jazz Band will do a set.

The rain date is Monday, with the time and location remaining the same.

U.S. Coast Guard Band, 1 p.m. Sunday, Fort Trumbull State Park, 90 Walbach St., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.
