Performances begin for the 2016 National Music Theater Conference

Surely you've noticed that a certain alum of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Music Theater Conference is taking Broadway by storm. Yes, Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose "Hamilton" is currently The Big Thing on The Great White Way, was once a music theater conference participant. Back in 2005, he was developing his show "In the Heights" at the O'Neill. "In the Heights" became a major, Tony-winning hit.

And here's your chance to see what up-and-coming shows are being worked on at this year's conference. The 2016 O'Neill National Music Theater Conference begins its public, script-in-hand performances this week.

In "The Museum of Broken Relationships," with book and lyrics by David H. Bell and music and lyrics by Daniel Green, Pierce wants his mother's wedding ring back when he confronts Kirsten as she is showcasing the Museum of Broken Relationships art exhibition at her gallery. That sets loose all sorts of secrets, intrigues and conflicts.

"Girl Shakes Loose," with book and lyrics by Zakiyyah Alexander and Imani Uzuri, centers on a young African-American woman looking to find her way. She's overqualified, unemployed and single, and she's searching for where home is.

"Darling Grenadine," with book, music and lyrics by Daniel Zaitchik, finds composer Harry dealing with his precarious relationships with his girlfriend, his brother, his dog, his piano ... and his gin and tonics.
