Gladys Knight sings at Foxwoods
Aretha Franklin may be "The Queen of Soul," but Gladys Knight is "The Empress of Soul." With those dueling nickname-titles, does that mean that, when it comes to ruling soul, it's a draw?
What we do know is that Knight has an amazingly supple voice that gave inimitable life to classics like "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me."
Knight performs Saturday at Foxwoods, along with The Whispers, whose hits included "Rock Steady," "It's a Love Thing" and "Lady."
In some recent concerts, Knight has turned her vocal gifts on some perfect-match covers, including Sam Smith's "Stay with Me" and both Adele's and Lionel Richie's "Hello." Here's hoping she pulls those out for her Foxwoods gig.
Gladys Knight and the Whispers, 8 p.m. Saturday, Foxwoods' Grand Theater; $30-$50; 1-800-200-2882.
