Mystic Seaport hosts its Sea Music Festival

From left, Danny MacLeod, John Cannon, Everett Brown and Kenny Wolin at last year's festival.

Mystic Seaport's 34th annual Sea Music Festival has become a global event of sorts, showcasing performers hailing from a wide range of places.

To wit: AcquAria is from Sicily, Kapriol'! is from The Netherlands, and Danny Spooner is from Australia.

Tonight's concert will feature Sasiedzi, a quintet from Poland. Poland experienced a huge wave of interest in sea chanteys back when that country was under Communist rule, and the interest is continuing today, thanks to such groups as Sasiedzi.

That's not to say there aren't American groups at the festival. There are, from Sara Grey and her son Kieron Means to the always-popular Mystic Seaport Chantey Staff.

The fest goes beyond music concerts, too, serving up storytelling (1 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat. and Sun.), a folk dance (4-6 p.m. Sat.), workshops and a symposium.
