CD tip: Sharks release the great Stones album that never was

    Killers of the Deep, Sharks

    CD tip

    Killers of the Deep

    Sharks

For almost 30 years, fans have been waiting with, first, certainty, then patient and positive expectations, and then dwindling hope — before finally concluding there will never be another great (or at least very good) Rolling Stones album. Guess what? The finest Stones album in decades has just come out. The only problem? It's actually by the fantastic if not-particularly-well-remembered British group that formed in the early '70s called Sharks. Including ex-Free bassist Andy Fraser, master session guitarist Chris Spedding and vocalist Snips, Sharks scored big with critics — and almost no one else. A shame. Following the 2015 death of Fraser, though, Spedding and Snips and a new rhythm section reformed and a few weeks ago released their new "Killers of the Deep" CD. It's a tremendous, energized, clever rock 'n' roll record — jubilant, full of wit and bluster and energy and riffs and lyrical and melodic hooks.
