The National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center has begun its 40th season, and it’s, as ever, an intriguing mix of material by some well-regarded artists.

The three shows selected for the conference are:

    “Home Street Home”

Book by Soma Snakeoil and Fat Mike with David Goldsmith; music by Fat Mike; lyrics by Fat Mike, Jeff Marx, and Soma Snakeoil

“Based on true stories of the authors’ experiences of homelessness and punk culture, the story revolves around a 16-year-old runaway who plunges headfirst into the subculture of life on the streets.”

Its final public script-in-hand reading will be at 7 p.m. Friday.

    “iLLA! A Hip Hop Musical”

Book, music, lyrics by Ronvé O'Daniel; music by Jevares C. Myrick

“As the 2008 U.S. financial crisis threatens to unravel his family, Prince, a classically trained dancer, dreams of becoming a hip hop star. Along the way, he falls hard for his competition’s girlfriend and is forced to confront the shattered dreams of his community.”

    Its public readings will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Wednesday, and 7 p.m. July 7.

    “Superhero”

Book by John Logan; music and lyrics by Tom Kitt

“A new musical telling the story of Charlotte and her teenage son Simon. They have been struggling with grief, and each other, since the death of Charlotte's husband and Simon's father a year before. Through their unlikely friendship with a mysterious man in their building, Jim, they move toward reconciliation and renewed hope.”

    Readings will be at 7 p.m. July 8; 3 p.m. July 9; 8 p.m. July 12; 7 p.m. July 14

“Superhero” composer Kitt shared the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama with Brian Yorkey for “Next to Normal.” Kitt and Yorkey collaborated again on “If/Then,” which starred Idina Menzel. Kitt’s other credits include being music supervisor, orchestrator and music arranger for the Broadway musical “American Idiot.”

"Superhero" book writer Logan won a Tony for his play "Red," and his movie credits include co-writing the Oscar-winning "Gladiator" and writing "The Aviator," with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The “Superhero” cast features Kelli O’Hara, a Broadway luminary who has been nominated for six Tonys, winning in 2015 for her performance in “The King and I.” She has also starred on Broadway in “South Pacific” and “The Bridges of Madison County.”

This is the last National Music Theater Conference for artistic director Paulette Haupt, who is stepping down after four decades leading the conference. She’ll be honored at the O’Neill’s Summer Gala on July 22.

Tickets for the readings are $30. Call (860) 443-1238 or visit www.theoneill.org.
