Queen + Adam Lambert bring hits to Mohegan Sun on Sunday

From the moment Adam Lambert first appeared as a contestant on "American Idol," it was pretty obvious he needed to be in Queen — and, in 2014, the two did join forces.

Lambert's pretty much the only guy with the charisma and vocal chops to step into the job once held by Freddie Mercury, and he's also smart enough to respect the melodies and songs but still stay true to himself. As for Queen, there's no way they could pick just anyone with cred and hit the road. They tried it with the very great Paul Rodgers and ... meh.

I don't really remember what Queen and/or Lambert have been up to since that 2014 tour came through the Mohegan Sun in spectacular fashion, but here they come again. On Sunday, Queen + Adam Lambert will fill the Sun Arena. But a comparison of the 2014 set list against what they're doing this time out personally depresses the hell out of me.

"Now I'm Here," "In the Lap of the Gods ... Revisited," "Seven Seas of Rhye," "'39," "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "Tie Your Mother Down," true highlights from their first tour, are all missing. Virtually none of the great "rocking" material from the first four albums is represented. To me, this is a deal-breaker. The big hits, though, will be there, for those of you wanting "We Will Rock You" and "Radio Ga Ga," and it will sound and look spectacular.

    Queen + Adam Lambert, 8 p.m. Sunday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $79-$149; 1-800-745-3000.
