Music tip: Tim Darcy impresses with 'Saturday Night'

    Saturday Night, Tim Darcy

Tim Darcy, the frontman from the Montreal based band Ought, released his first solo album "Saturday Night" in February — and as of late, he has been reaching a wider audience, including me, with the help of NPR, which recently featured him in the June podcast episode "Your Favorite New Artists of 2017" on "All Songs Considered." So, it's safe to say that Darcy has managed to set himself apart from the slightly rough-around-the-edges post-punk sound of "Ought" and has emerged with his own style. And although his solo-album isn't dissimilar from what he has already created with the band, on his own, Darcy tends to take that same sound and refine it with pop-ier melodies. In his fan-favorite single, "Tall Glass of Water," his lyrics are mysteriously poetic — lines such as "Is it fate, or is it popsicles?" come off more revelatory than what he may have intended, but at the same time, they're inexplicably relatable. Overall, it's reminiscent of early Velvet Underground — and for me, that's pretty fun.
