Brian Wilson bids adieu to masterpiece

    Brian Wilson (Barry Brecheisen, Invision/AP)

In 2000, slowly resurfacing after decades, Brian Wilson toured behind "Pet Sounds," an album released in 1966 by his band the Beach Boys. You've probably heard of it.

Now 76, Wilson is back on road on what is being billed as "Pet Sounds: The Final Performances," a thus far year-long trail of over 100 dates featuring not just the complete recitation of the album but also a generous opening set stuffed with Beach Boys hits and (relative) obscurities.

If this indeed is the last opportunity to witness Wilson performing one of the greatest records in this or any other solar system — and you've never experienced it — then you should be there. Maybe you HAVE seen it; you'll probably want to do it again.

Here's the thing. Wilson's actual onstage contributions probably won't be what you'd call the "heavy lifting" part of the recitation. He'll sing some, sure, and play some piano and maybe even talk a bit between songs. That's about the best we can hope for at this point in a life that's been emotionally tragic. But know this: the support band and vocalists will be spot-on perfect, and Wilson WILL do some stuff that will make your heart soar.

I guess the best way to think about it is that Brian Wilson is at the Grand Theater in Foxwoods tonight in homage to his masterpiece, "Pet Sounds." That's one hell of an opportunity.

Brian Wilson Presents "Pet Sounds: The Final Performances," 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $45, $55; 1-800-200-2882.
