Police charge two for Saturday altercation at Groton’s Poquonnock Plains Park

Groton ― Town police on Sunday said they arrested two men whose Saturday altercation at Poquonnock Plains Park ― on the sidelines of a youth sporting event ― “sent hundreds of players and spectators fleeing from the park in all directions.”

Randall Clark, 43, of Medford, Mass., was charged with risk of injury to a minor, carrying a firearm with intent to display, carrying a firearm without a permit, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree threatening, and second-degree beach of peace.

Dustin Hibbert, 30, of Bridgeport, was charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace.

Police said they were called to the park at 150 Fort Hill Road, where hundreds were watching several youth sporting events that were going on, at 1 p.m. after multiple people there reported seeing one of the men brandishing a gun.

In more 911 calls placed after that, people reported gunshots were fired, police said.

Police said after investigating, they learned the two had a physical altercation on the sidelines of one of the games. Then one of the men went to his car and brought out what onlookers were two guns.

Police said no shots were fired, and the two guns people reported seeing were searched for by K-9 teams but never found.

Clark and Hibbert, after being taken to Groton Police Headquarters and charged, were given New London Superior Court dates of May 20.
