Improv-happy SHEroes play Friday at Side Door

We realize that certain musical terms to describe aggregates of musicians have become overused, as per when two guys from the Tuesday Night Polka Jam at the Gale's Ferry Lion's Club joined up with the tissue-paper-over-comb "street performer" begging for scratch-off cards outside the New London 7-Eleven – and their PR rep calls them a "supergroup not seen since Emerson, Crosby, Palmer & Nash."

Enough with the "supergroup" tag, okay?

On the other hand, when pianist/composer Monika Herzig brings her intensely improvisational band SHEroes to Old Lyme's Side Door Jazz Club on Friday, it really is a pretty super band. It also includes trombonist Reut Regev, trumpeter Jennifer Vincent, flutist Jamie Baum, guitarist Leni Stern and drummer Rose Avila. And, as SHEroes might indicate, all of the members are women.

Monika Herzig's SHEroes, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $35; (860) 434-0886.
