Roots singer Samantha Fish appears Friday at the Kate

Eventually, animal rights activists will have to get involved in the business of band names. Musicians simply rely too much on animals when trying to identify their bands.

The Band Names Endangered Species list would certainly include bears, dogs, deer, cats, wolves, horses, myriad birds and, of course, sea creatures.

In the context of our underwater friends, we already have Fish (the not-as-great-as-his-replacement-Steve-Hogarth in Marillion), Reel Big Fish, Fishbone and Phish. Into this mix comes the fiery roots/blues/soul vocalist Samantha Fish. In her case, as it's her surname, I suppose there's not much Samantha can do about it. But wait! What if she changed her last name to "Bear"?

Oh, hold it — that won't work, either.

Anyway, Samantha Fish is a wonderful singer whose passion and skills are represented on the "Chills & Fever" album released in March of this year — and on which she teamed with the Detroit Cobras. The recording features astonishing renditions of classic tunes from the '60s and '70s by artists including Jackie DeShannon, Jerry Ragavoy and Allen Toussaint, and I can only assume this stuff is gonna blast into orbit in a live context.

See Samantha Fish Friday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Louie Fontaine appears in support.

Samantha Fish, 8 p.m. Friday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $34-$38; 1-877-503-1286.
