Members of Rusted Root appear Friday at the Kate

From left, Michael Glabicki and Dirk Miller (Submitted)

Nowadays, people discover music in hundreds of ways that, in the yellowing past, would have been beyond the realm of imagination. Years ago, you had word of mouth, the radio, your friends and, lording over all, the Wise Hipster that owned the record store.

    And movie soundtracks!

I would never have learned about Rusted Root if I hadn't been watching "Twister," the best tornado movie ever. Yes, it's true that some of the songs on the "Twister" soundtrack — "Child in Time" by Deep Purple or "Humans Being" by Van Halen — resonated in bigger fashion that Rusted Root's "Virtual Reality." But, now that I've brought it up, I'll bet you remember the exact scene where "Virtual Reality" appears in the movie. It's just when Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's squadron of weather wizards are racing towards a tornado! Yes, THAT tornado! Does that clear it up for you?

Anyway, what's important here is that Michael Glabicki, the guitarist/vocalist/composer for Rusted Root, is out on a solo tour and comes Friday to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. He'll be accompanied by RR guitarist Dirk Miller. Expect plenty of clever Rootness arrangements as well as surprises. And holler for "Virtual Reality." The late Paxton would want you to.

Michael Glabicki and Dirk Miller, 8 p.m. Friday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $28-$32; 1-877-503-1286.
