NL's Horns of Ormus celebrate new release

Go to http://www.facebook.com/thedayct at noon today for a live performance by Horns of Ormus

Maybe because I grew up in a rock era in which both Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears had numerous millions-selling songs, the first few times I saw the New London band Horns of Ormus, I kept looking for the trumpet and trombone players.

"Where are the horns in Horns of Ormus?" I pondered.

But it's not THOSE kind of horns. Maybe devil or elk horns? I don't know, but there are no cornets! And for that matter, I don't know what an "Ormus" is, either.

What I do know is that Horns of Ormus is an electrocution-strength trio that plays brazen, loud Brainy-Punk music. Imagine a feisty and experimental sonic cornucopia spilling out with ingredients like Fear, the Residents, Motorhead, your favorite smart-ass kid from high school, "Southpark," Marc Bolan, and — yes — just a pinch of celery salt.

If this doesn't help you get your head around the whole concept, well, head to the Telegraph Records Shop in New London at noon today when Horns of Ormus guest on The Day's "Live Lunch Break" concert series. The band's celebrating their new album, "Mythical Norman" — conveniently out on the Telegraph Recordings label — so this performance and interview serve as a nice mini-introduction.

The official "Mythical Norman" gala happens Friday when Horns of Ormus host a concert/signing at 33 Golden Street in New London. Methinks you'll like this record a lot.

Horns of Ormus, "Live Lunch Break," noon today, Telegraph Records, 19 Golden St., New London; free; theday.com/livelunch.

Horns of Ormus CD Release Party, 9 p.m. Friday, 33 Golden Street, 33 Golden St., New London; $5, CDs and merch available for purchase; (860) 443-1193.
