Groton ― A Thursday afternoon fire inside a commercial building at 801 Poquonnnock Road forced evacuation of a daycare center.

The small fire, contained to a battery-powered wheelchair that was plugged in and being charged, was quickly extinguished with a fire extinguisher, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said. No injuries were reported and damage was contained to the area around the wheelchair.

The fire occurred about 12:30 p.m. on the second floor of the commercial building in a business called Mind Matters, LLC, a facility serving adults with dementia. Also located in the building is Companion Animal Hospital, ManTech International and Cherished Children daycare center.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. All businesses were given permission to reoccupy the building.
