The greatness of the Jazz Underground

New London's Jazz Underground is literally just that - tucked neatly down a flight of steps on Golden Street. In a metaphorical sense, though, what we don't need is for the live music club's status to be underground - as in below the citizenry's radar.

A Saturday show, featuring renowned bassist/composer Brian Torff, is a fine opportunity for you to investigate the greatness of Jazz Underground.

Torff has performed with and recorded with the likes of Stephane Grappelli, Cleo Laine and Marian McPartland, and he was a member of both Errol Garner's band and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. In addition to his own albums, Torff has provided songs for Larry Coryell and George Shearing as well as scores for the Boston Pops and the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras.

Expect a fluid, wide-reaching and virtuosic evening of contemporary jazz.

Brian Torff, 8 p.m. Saturday, Jazz Underground Café, 33 Golden St., New London; $8; (860) 447-1125, jazzunderground.com
