Covanta gains 'green' honors

The Covanta Southeastern Connecticut Co. in Preston has been awarded the state's 2009 GreenCircle Award for its efforts to improve the state's environment.

Covanta staff formed a "Green Team" at the facility two years ago and partnered with The Nature Conservancy to improve the habitat for local flora and fauna at the Poquetanuck Cove Preserve.

In addition to Covanta's work with The Nature Conservancy, the award was based upon other environmental projects, including the firm's adoption and cleanup of a stretch of Route 12.

Covanta operates the energy-from-waste facility in Preston for the Southeast Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority.
