    Practice doesn't make perfect

UConn had good and bad moments in practice today while preparing for Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh. But don't read too much into that.

How well UConn practices has little to do with its game performance, according to coach Jim Calhoun."I've never seen a predictor," Calhoun said. "I can tell you when we've had a good practice or a bad practice. Today was halfway in-between. We were really good at certain points early and then we just didn't play as well."

First, he talked about a shoot-around prior to a 1994 NCAA Tournament East Regional semifinal against Florida."The best practice I still ever remember having, which I had to stop, was in Miami before we played Florida. The game didn't start until (late) at night. I still remember the energy that they had bottled up in the shoot-around. We hadn't played great againt Rider and George Washington. But we still had the best shoot-around. ... I had to really just stop them because they were just so sky-high."

Then Calhoun gave a second example."When we played Duke in the '99 for our first (national championship) win, I remember the shoot-around I just cut short because I was nervous that we weren't executing and couldn't wait to get the game on. It worked out that way."
