Barks and beers: Dog-friendly beer hall opens in Ledyard
Ledyard ― Few things are more popular than dogs and beer.
That’s why Sarah Scully decided to open a dog-friendly beer hall in the Gales Ferry section of town, the first of its kind in Southeastern Connecticut.
Barkin’ Barley, named after Scully’s family dog, Barley, celebrated its grand opening Friday afternoon. More than 60 people attended the grand opening, enjoying Connecticut craft beers and cocktails.
The idea started in 2017 when Scully, a medical electronics saleswoman, and her husband Patrick Sully sought more spaces where they could bring Barley and enjoy the summer.
“We really wanted to bring something new, something fresh. Dogs and beer go together, obviously,” Sully said.
The expansive space includes board games with seating overlooking a patio for dogs and children to roam around. With four children, Sully believed a space dedicated to fun and family was important.
Brandon and Ericka Margiotta run the bar together. They’re also married. The couple traveled the world together, tasting all types of craft beer. When Ericka and Scully met, Scully discovered her love for beer.
“Beer was always the topic of conversation. She was actually ‘Beer Chick’ in my phone for a while before I knew her name,” said Scully.
Scully knew Margiotta would be the best person to manage the beer selections and menu. Running a bar had always been a lifetime goal for Margiotta.
“I like to say that it's nice that my beer obsession got me something other than alcoholism,” Margiotta said.
Scully, a Waterford native, faced a series of challenges opening the hall. Their novel idea was untested and faced challenges. However, support from town officials and the Women's Business Development Council helped them along.
“We just weren't going to let this dream die,” Scully said.
The hall will also feature food truck vendors like Uncle D’s Blazin BBQ and Short Rib Cafe on weekends.
Scully is confident the beer hall will see immense success, since it’s the first business of its kind in the region. She’s even got expansion in the back of her mind.
