Next up: Iowa State/An Old Dominion fan's perspective on UConn

For the record, the next game for top-seeded UConn will be against No. 4 Iowa State at 12:04 p.m. Sunday in Dayton, Ohio (ESPN). That game will be followed by No. 3 Florida State vs. No. 7 Mississippi State at 2:32 p.m., featuring the other two teams to make the Sweet 16 in the Dayton Regional.

    Anyway …

I was curious this week about the crowd at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University, where UConn dispatched Southern and Temple in back-to-back routs in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.

There were a cascade of boos aimed at the Huskies on Sunday during their game with Southern.

Now, if you want to root for the underdog/are sick of hearing about UConn and its 74-game winning streak, that’s fine, but when it comes to booing Maya Moore, I get a little bit concerned.

(For those who are uninformed, Maya is not boo-able. Ever. Sorry. She’s the most likeable kid. Ever. Deal with it.)

So I went to find an Old Dominion fan in the crowd to talk to tonight.

I wound up meeting the perfect spokesman in Ed Ullom of Virginia Beach, who was wearing an Old Dominion T-shirt and is an alumnus of the school. He attends several ODU women’s games per year, bought his tickets even knowing the Monarchs weren’t in the tournament and yes, he was maybe rooting for Southern on Sunday.

But here’s the thing: Ed is a smart and appreciative fan who knows good basketball when he sees it.

“I was rooting against Connecticut, but as a basketball fan I like the way they play,” Ed said. “Whether you like them or not, they’re an extremely good basketball team. It’s almost an embarrassment of riches. The 10th man on this team could start at most colleges.

“The mark of a good basketball team … if you watch the game progress, they never really crushed Southern, they just slowly pulled away from them. All of a sudden it was a 40-point game.”

Ed had an interesting comment, saying that UConn’s guards were fluid in running the team and that’s what makes a good team go. The two sophomore point guards in Caroline Doty and Tiffany Hayes were what concerned UConn coach Geno Auriemma the most coming into the tournament. They looked just fine to this fan.

Also, Ed said that Old Dominion coach Wendy Larry went on her radio show and promoted the NCAA tournament games held in her gym, even though her team did not make it.

“She was telling everyone to come to this tournament and they would have the opportunity to see maybe the best women’s team of all-time,” Ed said. “She was pushing hard. … She’s cool.”

As it became apparent tonight that UConn was playing perhaps one of its best halves of basketball all year in beating Temple, shooting 77.8 percent in the first half, the 4,832 fans at Old Dominion were starting to cheer a little for the Huskies.

    There’s no denying they’re good.

Wonder who they’ll be rooting for in Dayton.
